Episode 5 Top 10 newbie mistakes when getting started

Hi Angela here with that helpful chick and Welcome to our fifth episode so today I want to talk about Top 10 newbie mistakes when getting started.

#1 – solely listening to advice regurgitated by others and NOT doing your own research

There are a lot of people online who will give you advice. Some know what they are talking about and some are just full of shit. Unfortunately you have no way of knowing the difference. That’s why it is important for you to do your own research. Don’t jump at the first guru you come across. Follow them, subscribe to their emails – find out what they are about. And if at all possible – meet them in person. This is the best way to really to get a sense of them.

#2 – thinking you can just put a website up and start making money (expecting immediate profit)

It takes work to build a business and the same is true whether it’s online or a physical business. THere is so much more to it then just building a website and I will go into more detail about this in future episodes.

#3 – not knowing who your audience is

You can’t sell steak to a vegetarian right? So you would not market to them. You need to know your audience. Do you have a product? Then know who it is that your product is going to help the most and speak to them. Create a avatar for yourself so you can have that one person to speak to. This makes your blogs, emails and sales copy more personal and more likely to get you conversions

#4 – not focusing on your audience

Yes we all got into business to make money but if you’re focused on the sale or on your bank balance then you’re not going to succeed. You need to focus on your audience and how you can help them. People buy solutions not products.

#5 – waiting til everything is ‘perfect’ to launch

Nothing will ever be perfect and you will go broke waiting on it to be perfect. Make it ‘good enough’ and launch already. Create the first module and then advertise it as a beta test. Get people to pay a smaller price to be part of your beta test and then you will have testimonials as well.

#6 – Analysis paralysis

Do you need to know your stats? Sure you do. Do you need to be checking them every hour on the hour, hell no. For your stats to be of any benefit to you, you need to look at the big picture. When looking at your analytics for your website for example – you want to see the behavior over a period of time. When you’re looking at your FB ads, you want to leave it for at least 48 hours so you can really see how the ad is performing.

#7 – looking for shortcuts

Sure there are a lot of ways to make quick cash when working online but this is no way to build your business. Look at the long game. Cutting corners and looking for shortcuts doesnt get you anywhere.

#8 – shiny object syndrome

You will also go broke quickly if you buy every new product or software you see. You will also get nowhere if you jump at every new strategy you come across. These are what is known as ‘shiny objects’. They will distract you big time and keep you from progressing and growing in your business.

#9 – not checking links

Always always always – check your links. You will lose so many sales if you’re buy links aren’t working and have to hurry up and make quick fixes. You want all of your links to work

#10 – going it alone

It’s important to have people in your life who understand what you are working towards and support you in your dreams and goals. It would great if they also understand the biz. I love going to meetups and talking to other people who know what the hell I’m talking about.

Bonus – having no clear goals

Sure you can just start writing a blog and see where it leads but that’s not going to make you any money is it? Set goals for yourself. Find out what you want to do, what you have to do to get there (goal) and then do it no matter what! And don’t beat yourself up if you don’t meet your goal by a certain date. It’s more important that the goal is achieved  than when it is achieved.

Episode 4 Ten things you probably don’t know about me

Hi Angela here with that helpful chick and Welcome to our fourth episode so today I want to talk about 10 things you probably don’t know about me.

I was a single mom for 18 years.

I have one child who is now 23 and raised her by myself. I have many stories but that would take up a lot of time here so let’s just say I learned many lessons over those 18 years that I feel made me not only into a better person but a better business woman.

I am 44 and have never lived in the same city for more than 3 years my entire life.

My parents weren’t in the military, we just moved a lot. I used to joke that we were fugitives or in witness protection.

I have been to 25 states.

I have always loved to travel and would make many trips when I was younger and many moves. I love that I have seen so much of the US and now want to explore outside the states.

I worked in corrections for 10 years.

I worked in all male, maximum security prisons. The most common question I get asked is ‘weren’t you scared?’ To be honest – no. Sure I saw a lot of scary things, a lot of disgusting things but if you always worry over what might happen, thats not living. Besides, I got to boss men around all day – you can’t beat that as a job perk!

I have been working online for 3 years.

Things started out slow for me but picked up momentum in the second year and I’ve had steady growth ever since.

I have been married for 6.5 years and been separated for 5.5 years.

It didn’t take long for me to realize my marriage was a mistake. I left my husband before our first anniversary but it just hasnt been a priority for me to get a divorce. I am going to free legal clinics now to learn how to do it myself.

I made my first visit outside the US last year – trip to the UK for 2 months.

I had a fabulous time and cant wait to go back.

I loved the UK so much, I want to move there (or at the very least, live there part-time).

It is my dream to have a home in the UK I can split my time between there and the states at least half the year. I hope to achieve this within the next 2 years.

One of my dreams is to build my business up to where I can hire single moms and help them build a business online.

I have a special place in my heart for single moms and am very protective of them. I had many people help me when I was one and I hope to do the same. I plan to build my business and when I start to hire I plan to hire and train single moms so they can have a way to support their family and relieve some of the stress they have.

Another dream of mine is to have a personal trainer.

One of my biggest obstacles is taking care of me. Working from home, you get in a routine and habits are hard to break. But not impossible. I would love to pay someone to come to my home and motivate me to get in better shape – be healthy. I would also love to hire a nutritionist to teach me how to cook healthier meals – again, someone to come to my home.

These things cost money so I better get to work and hustle some more!

Episode 3 The 5 tools/services/resources I use to be productive


Hi Angela here with that helpful chick and Welcome to our third episode so today I want to talk about the 5 tools/services/resources I use to be productive and organized.

I have many tools that I use in my day-to-day business. Many of them make my job so much easier. It is important to find the right tools that work for you. Here are just a few that I use everyday and how I use them.

Stardock Fences – This is a great organize Android desktop. now look at your desktop. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, it’s just a computer term for your screen,  where you can have all your icons. Most people just have a big mess. you have a screen full of icons and you can never find anything. what stardock fences does is enable you to organize your icon in Little Boxes basically so Stardock fences check them out and let me know what you think

Speed Dial 2 –  this is basically a visual bookmark. I like it because I can see little thumbnail images for my bookmarks. I can also organize my bookmarks into categories. So I have all my bookmarks that have to do with social in one tab and then I have individual tabs for each of my clients to bookmark all of the sites that I access for them. Google Calendar – I was resistant for a long time I’m on using my Google Calendar. no good reason I just never bothered to use it. well a couple weeks ago I decided to check it out and man am I glad I did. I Have a scheduling calendar that I use and it connects to my Google Calendar. so anytime a client makes an appointment it’s added to my Google Calendar. and vice versa. what I really like about the Google Calendar is how easy it is to edit appointment. I can drag and drop them just like a page builder. if you’re not using Google calendar yet I suggest you give it a try I believe you will love it as much as I do.

Mozilla Thunderbird –  although this is not a perfect solution it has worked well for me for going on two years. I have built many websites over the years and as a result I have many domain specific emails. Thunderbird gives me a way to access all of my emails in one place. at last count I believe I had 20 emails. now who wants the login to 20 different places just to check some emails – not me.

Google Drive (cloud storage) – Cloud storage is I believe my favorite tool. I like it so much I upgraded and I actually pay for additional storage not only with Google Drive but with additional storage as well. About a year ago go in a laptop that one day just decided it would not load WIndows anymore. I thought I had lost all my information. I ended up buying a USB bus,  removed my hard drive from my laptop,  plugged the hard drive into the bus and was able to get all of my files by hooking it up to a second laptop. once I finish that I decided I did not want to be in that situation again. I decided I would only use cloud storage for all my important files.

but I took it one step further. in my Google Drive on a Google doc I have a list of every program I have installed on my computer as well as the link to the website it was downloaded from. all of my images documents spreadsheets everything is now stored in Google Drive.

now Microsoft Excel and Word Documents sometimes lose their formatting when opened and drive.  so I found another cloud storage service called knowhow cloud.  I can access it online from any device but I also have it synced on my computer. so when I have Excel sheets I save to that cloud so that I can be sure that the formatting Remains the Same.

Episode 2 My Pet Peeve with Online Marketers

Hi Angela here with That Helpful Chick and welcome to our second episode. so today I want to talk about one of my biggest pet peeves with online marketers.

First let me say that we need to recognize that we do understand the role of an Internet marketer and that is the sell.  

I get that – we all get it – the point of internet marketing/affiliate marketing is to sell something to other people.  so I don’t have a problem with that.

But there is a way to do that and still be ethical. there’s a way to do that without being salesy and there is a way to do that and still help people and provide massive value.

Here’s the problem I too often see in ads from online marketers or I watch a webinar and I hear them use these words or something similar

I started out with nothing.

Now that statement is fine in and of itself.  the problem is it is usually followed by sentences similar to this:  

I started out with nothing. I only had $1,000 in the bank and $5,000 in savings

or here’s another one

my savings was running low and I had to go back to work in the corporate world

 Now maybe I’m being bitchy or maybe I’m being too critical but here’s the problem I have with those statements.  To me it sounds like they’re trying to appeal to someone who really does have nothing and trying to give them hope and maybe not even hope – they’re trying to give you the sense that they were in the same place you are if you have nothing and that if you just buy their program then you can be making the money that they are.

Here’s the thing though – if you have $1,000 in the bank and 5000 in savings or any amount for that matter – then you don’t have nothing – you have something. And if your savings is running out and you went back to the corporate world then you have something that’s not nothing.

You have options now.

Don’t get me wrong. I understand what they’re trying to do and their program may actually work. They may have the best program in the world.

I just have a problem with the way that they are presenting the situation. For example, in my own situation, I can honestly say that when I started working online I literally had nothing. I had no savings. I had no job, so I had no income. I had no money. When I found a training program I wanted to try and that I felt I could trust, I borrowed the money to pay for my first month that’s how broke I was and it was only $20 for the first month

So when I say I started out with nothing I feel it’s a true statement. Now before  the little hairs start raising on the back of your neck let me just tell you I’m not trying to sell you anything.  If you are interested in what I have to offer feel free to visit my website thathelpfulchick.com but that’s not what this is about.

What I’m trying to get you to see really, is just pay attention. There are a lot of great marketers out there who know how to get those soft spots, those pain points and that’s their job. I mean I’ll give you one example – Russell Brunson is an excellent marketer. fabulous. I mean oh my God amazing.

It is so easy to get caught up in all the hype.  And that’s not to say that Russell Brunson doesn’t have good stuff, he does. He has an excellent shit  and you can learn a lot from him.

But as an excellent marketer, he’s also going to upsell a lot of things you may not necessarily need.

And I’m guilty of falling for it myself. So I guess that’s probably not the best example for what I’m trying to explain here 🙂 because I don’t want anybody to think that I put Russell in that category because I don’t. He is a good example of somebody who is fantastic at marketing and how to get people excited about anything.

But there are those out there who are going to tell you whatever they think you want or need to hear to make a sale.

So the take away here is that I would love it if you would just open your eyes a little bit and be aware of what people are saying. I always thought that it was a great piece of advice to give yourself a cooling off period before making a large purchase. For example, if you see something you want to buy, wait 24 hours. If you still feel you want it, still feel you need it, then go ahead and buy it.

And don’t always fall for the scarcity tactic. Sometimes it is true. Sometimes marketers will have an offer that they will only offer for a limited time but I would say roughly 75% – that’s just off the top of my head I have no statistics back that up – but approximately 75% of the time that you see a scarcity tactic where they say you have to buy this within the next 15 minutes or this offer goes away or they say in 24 hours the price is going up so you have to buy now.

A lot of the times that is just a tactic. Don’t let someone talk you into doing anything you’re not ready for. More importantly anything that you’re not financially able to do.

Episode 1 Who Am I

Hi Angela here with That Helpful Chick.  Welcome to our very first episode of our new podcast.

Today I thought I would start with just a little introduction and let you get to know us.

To be honest there are so many people out there online doing videos, doing podcast, building websites – and you’re probably asking yourself, who do I need to listen to? who should I listen to?

And maybe you’re asking yourself why should I listen to this chick? and you should ask yourself that not only in regards to me but in regards to anyone out there.

What are people offering you to make you want to follow them? So I think the best place for us to start is to just tell you a little bit about how I got started and how I got to where I’m at now and maybe explain why I’m actually doing a podcast.

So I started working online three years ago and the reason was -well it was kind of a few different reasons. About that time I was diagnosed with degenerative disc. I had gone to the doctor because my back pain was was really bad. It was difficult for me to stand for long periods of time, sit for long periods of time. It was just hard to work a regular job, so I went to the doctor and I got diagnosed and at that same time in my life my daughter I was splitting up with  the father of her 2 kids.

She was going to need some help. Just all around general help with the kids.

At that time I decided to quit working and stay home and help my daughter. but after a few months of my daughter supporting me, I realized that that wasn’t for me. It didn’t sit well with me that my daughter was supporting me – her mother – that’s not the way it’s supposed to be.

So I began searching online to find a way to make money to help support myself and I did find a very good Training Program. I found a program which taught me how to build websites. I learned wordpress, SEO and I learned affiliate marketing.

And I tried that for a while but it wasn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be or maybe it was just me. So for probably about the first year I didn’t make any money I was building a website I was doing affiliate marketing but I wasn’t making any money.

So I decided to take the knowledge that I had learned and offer my services to other people. I began building websites for other people and maintaining websites for other people and starting to get a little bit of monthly income then.

It wasn’t enough to pay all my bills but it was enough that I could buy my daily needs – the essentials.

What I found was that as I learned, the more I wanted to learn. I really just love all the techy stuff that has to do with the on the back end of a business. About two years ago I started working with a really good client who is not only great to work for but is very knowledgeable in working in the online world so it was a bonus for me.

Not only do I get to learn by watching what she does but, the longer I worked with her the more I was learning about other softwares and applications that people use in business online. And now I know how to work in just about any application or tool that someone might want to use in their online business.

And with that knowledge I’ve gained more clients and I am able to help them in so many different ways and that’s the important part.

So as you listen to this podcast and any future ones that I record, I just want to give you a little idea of what to expect. One thing you won’t get is bullshit. I believe in telling things like it is. I believe in not sugar coating. None of us have time for that.

I believe in helping people because you can, not because of what you can get from them in return.

I plan to share many stories with you about things I’ve experienced in my journey of the last three and a half years,  I will be sharing Lessons Learned not only in business but in life
